We found Aldara wandering by herself in the cloisters. She’s taken to wearing the ‘boys’ clothes’ most of the time now. Guido despises them, so Aldara may as well use them, I suppose.

‘Have you seen Yehudah?’ she asked.

‘He’s in the infirmary. And so is Guido, and I want you to talk to him.’

‘Her. Not him. And her name is Sara.’

I ignored that. ‘Get him to talk to you about the Mudéjar. We have to know the man’s identity. He’s got some sort of hold over Guido, so the boy feels too frightened to say what he knows. Get him to tell you, Aldara, and come straight back here.’

With an odd look at me, she walked off to the infirmary.

Kit said, ‘Xurxo was right, Rory. Aldara knows time is not on her side. She may wish to marry, but it’ll have to be soon.’

‘Do you think Thuban is the Mudéjar?’ It’s been on my mind, ever since my dream revealed to me that Thuban’s a Muslim.

‘How can he be?’ Xurxo cried in disbelief. ‘Thuban is completely out of action, and has been for weeks!’

I didn’t mention my theory that he’d only been pretending to be ill; in my heart I knew it was nonsense. The man can’t possibly be the Mudéjar. But who the bloody hell is it then? Guido has to tell me. I can’t simply rely on Aldara.

I have to speak with Guido myself. Call him ‘Sara’ if necessary, but get him to bloody talk to me.
